POP!

Pop has many definitions:
  • Music of general appeal to young people, a bland watered-down version of rock'n'roll with more rythm and harmony and an emphasis on romantic love.
  • A genre that features a noticeable rythmic element, melodies and hooks, a mainstream stly and a conventional structure.
  • Music intended/ accepted by a wide audience
  • As in "popular music" most commonly associated today with rock or country but could also unclude folk.
...and shows just how interesting and versatile the genre is. I created an artist that had a friendy and appealing look, that would look good as a role model for young girls.

My images were all taken by a digital camera and editied in photoshop. I created a series of different looks to make the artist look fun, interestin and versatile, and meet the conventions of Pop appealing to a wide audience.

Other pop artists i studied and was inspired by were
  • Taylor Swift
  • Miley Cyrus
  • Selena Gomez
  • Demi Lovato

They all have a good repuataion and are idols for young girls around the world. Looking at magazines they have been photoed in, i was able to see the facial expression to reflect in my artist.

My complete magazine

This is my final product of my music magazine. To make my cover i used publisher and photoshop to edit the picture. I used fronts fron the internet for the title of the magazine, and google images for the barcode. I used bright basic colours that would be eye catching and appeal to my young target audience, and didnt make the cover to full of information in order to for my readers first impressions to be welcoming and not confusing. The bright colours are also a convention on the genre and taregt audience. The offers are well advertised on the front page by graphological features like the yellow star, and the attractive font. They are also codes for the positive attitude the magazine give out. It took me a number of tries to complete my magazine until i felt the final one was correct. By simply changes to things like the font, i felt it would overall be more appealing and suitable for my audience and fit the conventions of the genre-pop.

Compared to my preliminary task, i feel i have definiatly improved, and my confidence of using the new programmes is shown.

My double page spread

My final double page spread was definatly the hardest part of my task. It took my ages to decide on my final images to use as i had limited space, and editing took up a lot of the time. I wanted the pictures to be bright and eye catching, and be images my audience would really look at and be impressed by. By taking over 10 different styles of shot, i decided on the 4 above, as they showed off a variety of my artists character. By having the model wear peace symbols, fitted well to advocate the audience. I also used a big central image to break up the text by it being a sufficient gutter and catch the audience's eye staright away. This was my audience would want to read the article.
I wrote the article keeping in my what my audience wants to read about, while keeping it funny and casual. The simple language used makes it more understandable for the audience, and insured they wouldnt get bored reading it. The pull was used so that the audience could get an idea of what the article was about, to see if they would be interested in reading it all.
I wrote a kicker at the start of the article which was highlighted in pink to grab the audience's immediate attention. I also made it as persuasive as possible to interest the reader to read on. As the purpose was to enteratine, i wrote the article light heartedly and showed demographic and psychographic profile.

My contents

This is the final version of my contents page. I kept the background to a plain white in order for my audience to be able to read the text clearly, and focus more on the text than the look. I have set it out in two columns with 3 seperate sections to make it appear more interesting. I have used a variety of different fonts, but repeated the same font when writing the name of the magazine. This was to make the name more memorable, and as it was pink, appear to the girl target audience. I have used a striking image at the top of the page so my readers see it straight away, and want to look further to see more. I edited the brightness and background of the photo on photoshop using the magic eraser, and put a border around it to give it a finished look. I have also but dashed borders to show the difference in pages in my magazine, and separated my welcoming introduction by black lines. I feel compared to my preliminary task, my contents is definatly more appealing and constructed a lot better. I feel my target audience would want to read my contents as it is appealing, and have included features my audience look most for in a magazine by doing my survey.

Deconstruction of a contents page

The contents page above is from Mizz magazine which is also targeted towards a young girl audience and follows the conventions. The colourful colour scheme is used throughout which makes it eye cathcing and interesting for the reader the look at. It is well structured in different coloumns to seperate the information clearyl so it is easily understandable. The images used are all at a reasonable size to see, without taking up too much space for the text. The coloured subheadings show the reader where the different topics are found in the magazine. This makes it more interesting for the reader to look at.
